History of Carlow Town

History has it that at one time the converging rivers Barrow and Burrin overflowed to form four lakes, giving the name “Ceatharlach”, now Carlow, to this area that is known as the “Celtic Centre of Ireland”. The impressive River Barrow has long provided a border between the counties of Carlow and Laois and has overseen an interesting and turbulent history from Carlow Town’s status as an Anglo-Norman stronghold to the burial of the 1798 rebels in Graiguecullen.

Directions

From Carlow: Travel over Graiguecullen Bridge. Take a left at the traffic lights and follow this road for c. 1 mile. Highfield Manor is located on the right hand side.
